About
the Lucky Irish Penny In the mid 1800's young people were leaving Ireland to find a new life in America and in their pockets, they put an Irish Penny for good luck. They believed the Irish Penny had the power to lead them to prosperity, a belief held to this day. The Irish Harp, the national symbol of Ireland, is on one side and the other side has a hen and two chicks. An other legend says it is returned money given when the price of a transaction is agreed on to wish luck with the new purchase. To this day, the "Lucky Penny" tradition survives in small farming communities. |
